Digital marketing – the case of Sephora Direct
Digital marketing – the case of Sephora Direct
In this Collaboration, you will consider digital
marketing, identifying the key advantages to developing a digital marketing
strategy and the challenges to overcome.
Julie Bornstein, senior vice president of Sephora
Direct, is seeking to double her budget for social media and other digital
marketing initiatives for 2011. Bornstein must take into account that the
funding requested will likely come at the expense of Sephora's traditional
marketing programs. Importantly, Bornstein needs to begin thinking about a
cohesive long-term strategy that clearly identifies the role that digital
platforms play and how they help Sephora maintain its leadership position in
the prestige beauty care space.
To complete this Collaboration:
By Day 3 (Saturday)
For your Initial Response, in 300–500
words:

advantages to developing a digital marketing strategy and the main challenges
that need to be overcome.
Submit your Initial Response to Turnitin and
post to the Collaboration Forum.

Module Project
Compare and contrast digital marketing
strategies
(Final submission: 5000 words)
Your Module Project will be to compare and contrast
the digital marketing campaigns of two very different global brands of your
choice.
Tafesse (2016) carried out an important study
considering the ways to measure social media success in experiential digital
marketing, creating a coding manual to evaluate the success of campaigns on
Facebook. The study identifies the most important dimensions of brand
experience as perceptual, social, epistemic and embodied. For your Module
Project, using Tafesse’s (2016) indicators of consumer engagement with digital
brand strategy, compare and contrast the digital marketing campaigns of two
very different global brands of your choice.
To prepare for this week’s Module Project submission
you will need to read and evaluate Tafesse’s (2016) model of consumer
engagement in social media to become familiar with the concepts. You will then
need to review which companies that you are familiar with have implemented
social media campaigns. It is important that the brands should target different
sectors, for example a soft drinks company vs a fashion brand or a supermarket
vs a mobile phone company as this will allow you to make more detailed
comparisons of their digital marketing activity. They should be recent
campaigns that have taken place over the last 12-24 months.
You will complete this Module Project in
four submissions:
1.0 Introduction, due in Week 1 (this week)
2.0 Digital Strategy Analysis, due in Week 3
3.0 Literature Review, due in Week 5
4.0 Recommendations, due in Week 7
Note: All research for your Module Project should be
from secondary, desk-based sources e.g. academic journals and
public websites. You should not collect primary data such as interviews
or questionnaires as this would require ethics approval.
To complete this Module Project
submission:
By Day 7 (Wednesday)
Complete section 1.0 Introduction of
your Module Project. Identify the 2 companies that you will be analysing within
your Module Project (300-500 words).
Briefly explain why these companies have been selected
and why they are of interest and relevance to you.
Submit your Module Project to Turnitin.
This Module Project submission is not
graded, but you will receive feedback from your Instructor to help you improve
your work. Please take advantage of this opportunity to learn from your
Instructor’s feedback — give the assignment your full effort and ask for
clarification on any feedback that you do not understand.

initiatives that helped to realise his vision?
What were the key challenges that Stack faced in
implementing the Tate’s digital strategy, and what did he do to help to
overcome them?

Compare and contrast digital marketing
strategies
(Final submission: 5000 words)
Your Module Project will be to compare and
contrast the digital marketing campaigns of two very different global brands of
your choice.
This week, you will complete the Digital
Strategy Analysis section of your Module Project. For each
company, you should create a brief summary of the company, its strategy and
target market and its recent digital marketing campaigns (references should
mostly come from company websites and press articles; no primary research e.g.
interviews or questionnaires should be conducted for this report). For
each company, you should apply Tafesse’s (2016) digital marketing model
with analysis and discussion of the four key areas (Perceptual, Social,
Epistemic and Embodied) and aim to conclude this section with a summary of the
key strengths and weaknesses of the company’s digital marketing approach. Based
on your analysis of the two companies, comment on significant similarities and
differences between their two approaches. You should consider the global
location of customers and whether or not they have access to all digital
platforms and social media tools. You should also consider how your chosen
companies have dealt with variations in location and detail the specific areas
for consumer engagement that you have identified. Without discussing specific
recommendations at this stage, comment on the areas where one or the other or
both may need to develop further, or where one might learn from the other.

Personal Development

Digital identity
(Final submission: 1500-2000 words)
Digital identity
(Final submission: 1500-2000 words)
For
your Personal Development Plan (PDP), you will reflect upon your own digital
identity and consider what steps you can take to develop your personal brand
via your digital identity, both short- term over the course of this module, and
long-term over your future career.
In
this Digital Marketing module, your Personal Development Plan (PDP) will allow
you to see how you have assimilated information over the course of the module
to assess your own personal digital footprint, and what practical steps you can
take to improve your personal digital identity. Therefore the focus is mainly
on personal development and critical reflection. Your digital identity is what
others can view about you in an online environment, how you will be perceived
by colleagues, employers, customers and businesses. It is therefore vitally
important that you “sell” yourself in the best possible way using all of your
new knowledge and understanding about digital marketing practices.
To prepare for this PDP submission:
Review
the Media Literacy for Personal Branding in this week's
Learning Resources.
To
evaluate your current personal digital branding position you will firstly need
to complete a ‘gap analysis’ just as marketers who were promoting a new brand
would.
Critically
reflect on your current personal digital identity. What digital platforms and
social media do you currently engage in and how advanced is your digital brand?
If
you could rebuild your personal brand via your digital identity, what would you
stand for? What would you like others to know about you? How could you improve
your existing digital footprint?
To complete this PDP submission:
By Day 7 (Wednesday)
Provide
a summary evaluation of your current digital identity. From what you have
learnt so far during this module, identify three practical and meaningful
things you could do in the next 4 weeks to enhance your digital identity
(500-750 words).
Note: you will be asked to
reflect on your progress in implementing these changes in your final PDP
submission.
Post
your findings to your My Working Group and discuss each
other’s analysis of personal digital identity.

Digital identity
(Final submission: 1500-2000 words)
For your Personal Development Plan (PDP),
you will reflect upon your own digital identity and consider what steps you can
take to develop your personal brand via your digital identity, both short-term
over the course of this module, and long-term over your future career.
This week, you will continue to assess
your own digital identity, developing your PDP to include reflections on how
your learning on this module – through the weekly topics, the Collaborations,
the discussions with your My Working Group – has influenced your thinking
around your own digital identity.
Your final PDP will consolidate your
learning and reflections from across the whole module, in particular from ‘Your
digital identity’ (Week 4) where you received feedback from your Instructor and
collaborated with your peers. Therefore, please ensure that you reflect on how
this contributed to your learning in developing your understanding of both the
module topics and your professional skills.
To prepare for this PDP submission:

identity, how has the research and discussion helped you to understand how

Did you find anything unexpected when you
carried out your gap analysis?
How did your My Working Group discussions
— in particular the insights that you gained around your peers’ approaches to
digital identity — influence your own thinking and future development of your
personal digital identity?
