KMBA 639 Project Management

Week 1 Collaboration
Project management professional associations
Many project management professionals say that professional associations have a lot of control over the future direction of the discipline of project management. However, some critics state that professional associations have not done enough to advance the discipline. Critics propose project managers are well positioned to control and influence their industry and business market. In this week’s Collaboration, you will critically analyse and discuss the role of project managers in the context of professional associations.
To prepare for this Collaboration:
Read these articles:
Söderlund, J. (2004) ‘Building theories of project management: past research, questions for the future’, International Journal of Project Management, 22 (3), pp. 183-191.
Söderlund, J. & Maylor, H. (2012) ’Project management scholarship: relevance, impact and five integrative challenges for business and management schools‘, International Journal of Project Management, 30 (6), pp. 686-696.
To complete this Collaboration:
By Saturday (Day 3), in an approximately 300- to 500-word response, introduce yourself to your colleagues, and add a brief post discussing the role you expect professional associations to play in your professional development and the development and discipline of project management in the current complex and changing market. Also explain what the following factors mean for the profession of project management:
Growing demand for complex, customised goods and services
Exponential expansion in information sharing
A global production–consumption environment
Global supply chain management and outsourcing
Shift towards the consumer whose requirements are changing
Global technology competition
By Wednesday (Day 7), post 3–5 responses to your colleagues by:
Offering contributions based upon your prior experience.
Extending the discussion into new but relevant areas.
Modelling or promoting critical reflection from what you have read.
Ensure that you spread your Collaboration posts across at least three separate days of each week. This will help maximise the value of your collaboration with colleagues and serve to meet the learning objectives for each activity.

Week 1 Module Project
Project selection
For the Module Project, you will consider the following scenario: in an effort to find opportunities to improve project success, you have been assigned the responsibility of reviewing the way projects are being managed within your organisation. To do so, your manager has recommended that you select a past project and review the processes followed to select, scope, execute and close it. In addition to this review, you will prepare an analysis of this past project and provide future recommendations in a final report.
The most important function of the assignment this week is to make sure you have identified the appropriate level, type and scope for the project you will spend significant time critically analysing. The ideal project will have at least the following characteristics:
It should be one that you have been involved with.
It should include at least 20 tasks and a maximum of 50 tasks.
It would be preferred if the project has been completed, but this is not a requirement (e.g. you could select a project that you are working on at the moment).
Consider how the type of project that you select may affect choices regarding management approaches, planning models and strategic alignment.
To complete this Assignment:
By Wednesday (Day 7), submit a brief (approximately 500-words) proposal for your selected project, summarising the characteristics in a Word document. Submit your proposal to the Turnitin link provided.

Week 2 Collaboration
Critical success factors and stakeholders, part 1 (2-week activity)
No organisation has unlimited resources, and therefore cannot do all projects simultaneously. Senior managers will tell you that ‘it all has to be done’; that may be true, but it is not possible to do all of them at the same time if you have limited resources. Projects need to be evaluated and be ranked based on their contribution to the strategic value and goals of the organisation. The interdependence among the triple constraints of scope, budget and schedule determine the composition of the portfolio of projects.
This week, you will examine critical success factors and consider how project selections align with strategy. Using industry tools, skills and best-practices, project structures and project managers adapt to the increasingly complex global business environment.
For each of the project classification structures, you will explore the impact of uncertainty on the methods, tools and choices available to project managers for adapting to the unique needs of each project. As you study the materials for this week, engage in a discussion with your colleagues, reflecting on projects with which you are familiar. Critically analyse what combination of approaches provides the most insight for you in addressing the unique challenges in your organisation.
To complete this Collaboration:
By Day 3 (Saturday), in an approximately 300- to 500-word response, address the following issues/questions: Identify three critical success factors for project success (e.g. risk management, top management support, and planning), explain and post your critical success factors and why they are important.
Submit your initial response to the Turnitin link provided and post to the Collaboration Forum.
Until Day 7 (Wednesday), post 3–5 replies to your colleagues’ posts in the Collaboration Forum, critically analyse the merits of your peers selected factors, and how they compare to your own selected factors.
Ensure that you spread your Collaboration posts across at least three separate days of each week. This will help maximise the value of your collaboration with colleagues and serve to meet the learning objectives for each activity.

Week 2 Personal Development Plan
Setting professional project management goals
Project managers are increasingly seen as mini CEOs, who are also responsible for achieving business results, and inspiring and motivating the project team. This week, you will spend some time reflecting on the first Personal Development Plan goals set in Week 1. How have they changed over the course of the programme? How successful have you been with your progress and achievement of your learning goals? What new goals do you want to set as you consider the topics and focus of this module? At the end of the week, you will submit a brief reflection on how you imagine the content of the Project Management module will help you attain your personal and professional learning goals.
To complete this Assignment:
Review your Personal Development Plan from Week 1.
Consider the project management role that best meets your professional goals and personal skills and experience.
Identify key factors involved in successful project management.
Identify which success factors you wish to focus on developing further throughout this module.
By Wednesday (Day 7), submit an approximately 500-word paper that describes your plans for further developing your strengths and gaps in order to achieve your professional project management goals. Include goal achievement plan details such as measures for success, resources and action steps. You can complete the Goal Achievement Plan template provided to help organise and inventory your ideas and plans, but you are not required to use it.

Week 3 Collaboration
Critical success factors and stakeholders, part 2
While change is inevitable in projects, taking a stakeholders’ view when developing the scope of a project helps mitigate the communication challenges that arise when reporting progress. It also helps managing any changes and deviations from the original plan, whether these are triggered by the project’s technical challenges, or by stakeholders’ changing needs.
One critical success factor is stakeholder involvement and how it is managed. This week, you continue last week’s Collaboration by critically reflecting on how stakeholder management plays a part in the original three factors identified in Week 2.
By Day 3 (Saturday), in an approximately 300- to 500-word response, address the following issues/questions: Discuss how managing the views of stakeholders, from both within and outside the project team and organisation, can help increase the chances of success of the project.
Until Monday (Day 5), engage in a discussion with your colleagues by posting and replying to each other’s posts (minimum 3–5 substantive responses; you should aim to collaborate on three separate days).
In your discussion consider and evaluate the following:
Supporting others’ views or providing an alternative perspective.
Asking probing questions to learn more about your colleagues’ views.
Extending the conversation into new but relevant areas.

Week 4 Collaboration
Estimating and critical path analysis, part 1
Inaccurate time estimates can inflate cost estimates, risking your ability to provide accurate completion dates and costs for the success of the project. In this week’s Collaboration, you will discuss the various examples of estimation techniques, and the costs and risks associated with them. You will engage in a discussion with your colleagues to analyse the factors that influence estimation accuracy.
To prepare for this Collaboration:
Read these assigned Required Resources:
Doloi, H.K. (2011) ‘Understanding stakeholders' perspective of cost estimation in project management’, International Journal of Project Management, 29 (5), pp. 622-636.

To complete this Collaboration:
By Day 3 (Saturday, 300- to 500-words), using examples of estimating failures and successes, submit a post that analyses the factors and assumptions that can influence the accuracy of estimates. Be sure to consider the issues discussed in the Doloi (2011) article and the tools and techniques presented on the Web site link provided.
Submit your initial response to your instructor using the Turnitin link provided in addition to posting it to the Collaboration Forum.
Until Day 7 (Wednesday), review responses by other students and make three to five meaningful responses in three separate days of the week (e.g. reply to a colleague who has a different opinion than your own). Ensure that you spread your Collaboration posts across at least three separate days of each week. This will help maximise the value of your collaboration with colleagues and serve to meet the learning objectives for each activity.
Your responses should provide evidence that you have critically reflected on the material by questioning assumptions, revealing new personal insights and probing and/or posing questions for further investigation.

Week 7 Collaboration
Leading teams in uncertain environments, part 2
Project classifications attempt to address the interaction between complexity and uncertainty and the impact that this interaction has on project management practice. This week, you continue last week’s conversation about managing and leading teams within an uncertain environment. People say that managing projects is about ‘managing risks’. As shared in this module, unpacking the definition of risk is an involved exercise. Consider the factors that contribute to risk and uncertainty as well as the difference between risk and uncertainty in project management as you continue your Collaborative Activity with your colleagues.
To prepare for this Collaboration:
Reflect on this week’s material.
From a project manager perspective, analyse the differences between risk and uncertainty.
Evaluate how your personal leadership style influences your ability to manage projects in uncertain environments.
To complete this Collaboration:
Until Monday (Day 5),
engage in a discussion by posting and replying to each others’ posts (minimum three to five substantive responses you should aim to collaborate on 3 separate days). Post a response to the following: How can a project manager apply risk management tools to influence their impact on the project’s outcome?
Your responses should provide evidence that you have critically reflected on the material by questioning assumptions, revealing new personal insights and probing and/or posing questions for further investigation.
By Wednesday (Day 7),
post a maximum 250-word Individual Collaboration Summary of the degree to which the risk management process prepares the project manager to lead a team to deal with unexpected events that could influence the outcome of the project. Critique readiness of the project management team to deal with expected and unexpected risks.
Ensure that you spread your Collaboration posts across at least three separate days of each week. This will help maximise the value of your collaboration with colleagues and serve to meet the learning objectives for each activity.
Submit your summary to the Turnitin link provided and post to the Collaboration Forum.

Week 8 Collaboration
Implementing project reviews
When various stakeholders obtain useful information, the organisation needs to be able to ‘learn’ from it. The organisational learning literature includes several interesting articles explaining both the barriers and the processes of achieving higher levels of learning. At the project level, however, literature and practical applications are less frequent. A notable exception is the article of von Zedtwitz (2002), who conducted a series of in depth interviews to explore the different levels of learnings achieved from reviewing R&D projects. Using organisational learning literature, they have argued that double loop learning, i.e. learning which leads to changes on how the system operates, should be the ultimate aim of project reviews. They argued that there are several behavioural barriers that limit the potential for learning, and they developed a model that would help address it.
After reviewing von Zetwitz’s (2002) article, discuss how a project management system can be constructed to ensure that both SLL and DLL occur during the project closure process.
To prepare for this Collaboration:
Reflect on this week’s Learning Resources.
Read the article:
von Zedtwitz, M. (2002) ‘Organizational learning through post-project reviews in R&D’, R&D Management, 32 (3), pp. 255-268.
To complete this Collaboration:
By Saturday (Day 3), submit a 300- to 500-word initial post discussing the challenges of implementing a project monitoring process. Address these questions in your post:
After reviewing the von Zedtwitz’s (2002) article, analyse how project review processes can feed into double loop organisational learning.
Ensure that you spread your Collaboration posts across at least three separate days of each week. This will help maximise the value of your collaboration with colleagues and serve to meet the learning objectives for each activity.
Submit your initial response to the Turnitin link provided and post to the Collaboration Forum.

To prepare for this Assignment:
Read the assigned readings for this week.
Reflect on your successes and challenges completing the learning goals and objectives you set in Week 2.
To complete this Assignment: Create a 2,000-word report reflection using the skills you developed in this Project Management module. Your reflection should address the following:
Survey the tools you used to monitor your progress.
Evaluate the progress you have made to date in achieving your learning goals including successes and challenges.
Organise your progress report using the work breakdown structure from Week 4.
Critique and apply any specific insights or perspective shifts that require revising your learning goals.
By Wednesday (Day 7), compile assignments from Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8 into one document. Submit your final PDP in a single Microsoft Word document to the Turnitin link provided.
